Most examples in existence are new but without factory plastic. Even the samples that retailers were providing for contests in 2014 were not wrapped in plastic! I was fortunate enough to source several of the earliest samples of this frame.
Most racquet collectors and Federer fans alike have already swept these frames up. It is unlikely anyone would be willing to relinquish these racquets. The reason - these frames are very hard to obtain because these were not made widely available to the retail public. Almost immediately, upon look and touch of this custom frame, you will notice this is NOT a RETAIL VERSION of the RF97. This racket is a custom, matte black, pro stock that was used by Federer in early 2014. Federers Custom, Blacked-Out, 97 Square-Inch Prototype Frame. Starting in January of 2014, Federer began publicly using the matte black, i.Blacked-out, "stealth" prototype 97 square-inch frame. Almost immediately, the tennis world developed great interest and curiosity as to what frame Federer was actually using.
More importantly, everyone wondered if Wilson would actually sell this frame to the general public. To promote Federers new frame, Wilson put out an advertising campaign called "#betterer".
As part of the campaign, Wilson released a print advertisement of the racket which listed the specs of the frame. More interestingly, the ad showed a very clear photo of the frame - a blacked-out, matt black, prototype version of the frame that Federer used in match play starting in 2014. Federer's solid results with the frame already generated a lot interest from Federer fans and racquet collectors. Combined with Wilson's aggressive and very successful marketing campaign, the buzz for the upcoming frame was through the roof. Many speculated that Wilson was actually going to sell the infamous blacked out prototype of Federer's 97 square-inch frame.
Wilson produced an extremely limited quantity of the stealth blacked-out 97 square-inch frames and even made available to a select few in media and retail (as well as others with special connections). In fact, tennis online retailing giants, Tennis Warehouse, Midwest Sports, and Tennis Express each received prototype versions of the frame to give away in contests. In addition, select retailers in Asia also landed some of these rare prototype frames that were also used to create more buzz for the actual unveiling of the racket.
Lastly, Wilson even made a few of these stealth prototypes available for up-close view at certain tennis tournaments. See photo below of the prototype at Wilson's booth at the Cincinnati Masters event. Rumors Quashed Wilson Debuts Retail Version of RF97. Intense speculation and conjecture pointed to signs that Wilson would actually sell the blacked-out version of the frame. Unfortunately, however, as you know, it was not meant to be.At the Rogers Cup, Wilson and Federer officially debuted the actual, retail, "red and black" version made for the general public. In other words, Federer stopped playing with the blacked-out version and began wielding the official retail version, which would be known as the Prostaff RF97 Autograph. Federer eventually played the 2014 US Open with the official, retail-painted RF97 Auto and the rest is history.
One of the Most Desired Federer Frames. To much chagrin and disappointment, the blacked-out, prototype frame was never mass-produced and was never made available to general public.
But clamor and desire for the stealth, blacked-out matte finish, prototype frame did not wane. Perhaps it is due to the unique look and simplistic beauty of a matte black finish. Or perhaps it is a desire to obtain what Federer actually used underneath the retail graphics. Regardless of the reason, the blacked-out prototype version of the RF97 will go down as one of the most sought-after and desired Federer frames in history. It will also probably be one of the most collectible, rarest and valuable versions of Federer's frames available.
In fact, Roger Federer's own foundation offered one of Federer's blacked-out, prototype frames. As you probably know, this custom pro stock racquet is extremely hard to find. This racquet is rare because of its unique and custom paintjob. In other words, this frame was never offered to the public i. Furthermore, Federer only used this unique custom paintjob frame for such a short time during his career.
As such, there are very few known examples of this frame in existence. More importantly, this racket is valuable as an incredible piece of history due to its association with the greatest player of all time. Underneath every paintjob iteration of the RF97 is the original, prototype version. As such, most collectors and racquet aficionados want what Federer actually uses.Once In A Lifetime Opportunity. Throughout the years, I have been fortunate to have the access and ability to obtain rare tennis racquets. My special connections allow me to acquire special players' frames, custom pro room frames, and vintage, discontinued, new old stock racquet collectibles.
Once this frame is gone, it is gone forever. This special frame might go down as the rarest paintjob Federer frame. This frame is a must-have for any die hard tennis collector and Roger Federer fan. This is a ONE-OF-KIND racquet. This is an as-is sale.
